Elective
Days
Elective Days are about how to go about preparing yourself to go on an overseas elective...
If you are thinking of taking an elective placement overseas as
part of you training, have you given thought to the idea of going
into a Missionary situation? If this even
tweaks
your interest, then read on!
Why Take your
Elective Overseas?
We live in a world that is far more connected, and yet far more
unequal than in any age before. Every year, twenty million people
in the developing world die of simple, preventable illnesses simply
because they cannot access adequate or affordable health care.
At the same time, as God's people we are called to both spread the
gospel of Jesus, and to show care and compassion to the sick, the
poor and the lost [Matt 25 v40, & 28 Vs 19&20].
As a future health care professional, you have the opportunity to
use your skills now, and in the future to serve God in many ways,
here in the UK and overseas. Taking an elective in a mission setting
gives you the chance to see what is happening outside the UK, to
use your existing skills in new ways, to develop new skills, and
above all to see God at work in new ways in your life and in the
lives of those with whom you work and for whom you care.
What Elective Days are About
If you are considering doing your elective overseas, there are a
lot of practical things to think about - where to go, how to pay
for your travel and accommodation, your own health needs, etc. There
also such concerns as working in a setting where you do not know
the language or the culture, where the food and living conditions
are totally alien, and where clinical practice may be very different
from here in the UK.
Elective Days are about how to go about preparing
yourself to go on an overseas elective, about what to expect physically,
professionally, culturally, and spiritually.
If you want to see something new of God in your life, to stretch
your skills, and broaden your horizons, then an
Elective
Day is for you.
