Reading No. 16 - Reliant on God: Provision
So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide.
(Genesis 22: 14)

It was the end of the six weeks of my elective - and after a very healthy trip, two of our team members became ill, one of them particularly seriously and both requiring hospital admission. Naturally we were concerned for them, and had to delay our proposed travel arrangements until they were discharged.

Unfortunately in order to be able to catch our flight this meant travelling at night (with eight white women in a minibus, and African roads, this already was not an ideal situation) ... and then we started to run short of petrol. Town followed town with no sign of the welcoming green and yellow lights of a BP garage, the tank was on empty and our sick ones needed rest... and so we prayed. A lot! (and then a bit more for good measure). Lo and behold, against all odds, an open petrol station. Co-incidence? ... I don’t think so!

God is so faithful in providing for our needs and yet it is so easy to forget to thank Him for the so many things we take for granted in everyday life (OK it sounds cheesy ... but hang on). Sometimes it’s only when faced with a situation like the one above, when we’re lacking mobile phones or the AA, that we realise how vulnerable we are.

When was the last time we thanked God for keeping us safe as we travel, in my case around the streets of London? I’m not sure I can remember. Perhaps we need to take time to think and recall the many things that God provides us with. Because they are exactly that - His provisions.

Prayer and Action
Is prayer a last resort? Start a habit of making prayer your first course of action.
