Journey to Justice - Breaking the Chains of Global Debt

Jubilee Debt Campaign |
In May 1998 70,000 people from across Britain and the world formed a human chain in Birmingham to demand debt cancellation for the world's poorest nations from the G8, the leaders of the world's richest nations. It was a seminal event, a milestone on the journey to justice.
Ten years on billions of dollars of debt has been cancelled; the lives of millions have been changed. There are children in school, teachers employed, immunisations given, retro-viral drugs made available, water and sanitation improved.
But the debt crisis is not over. Injustice, exploitation and imbalances of power still characterise relationships between rich and poor nations; many of the world's poorest countries are still in need of debt cancellation; new processes that end damaging economic conditionality, deal with illegitimate debt and ensure responsible future lending are urgently needed.
That's why on 12th April the Drop the Debt Fast begins, highlighting 36 countries still urgently needing debt cancellation if their Millennium Development Goals are to be met and poverty combated effectively. Individuals and churches are being urged to join in – even just for one day – to make the most of this opportunity to emphasise that cancelling debt is unfinished business.
It culminates on Sunday 18 May 2008, when people will once again gather in Birmingham for a unique event organised by Jubilee Debt Campaign in the prestigious ICC, the very building where the G8 met in 1998. They will join together as people of belief in justice, gathered from across the ethical, religious and ethnic communities in Birmingham and the UK.
The event will celebrate what the campaign has achieved and demand further action to end the scandal of unpayable and unjust international debt. Major speakers – Archbishop Ndungane (former Archbishop of Cape Town) and government minister Shahid Malik are already booked – will be a part of a powerful mix of voices from the South, visuals, news, music and drama that will inform and inspire the campaign veterans and a new generation committed to economic and social justice.
The day will begin with special services in Birmingham's churches and other faith centres. Centenary Square outside the ICC will resound to drums and music as those attending gather together, and provide the setting for a final demonstration of commitment to mark another milestone on the journey to justice, the determination to keep the flame of hope burning as it passes from generation to generation.
