Response to Indian Ocean Tsunami
As Christians we are deeply aware of the enormous pain, suffering and personal loss both of life and livelihood brought about by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004.
Our umbrella organisation, ICMDA, which is in contact with our sister organisations in the region, is seeking urgently to establish coordinating channels through which to direct offers of personal service and financial support. They recommended two websites that provide up to date information as well as indicating opportunities for Christian health professionals from across the globe who wish to help.
These are: http://www.eficor.org and http://www.linkinghands.org. 20 more doctors and 20 qualified nurses are needed to help in Aceh for at least another 2 weeks. 2 Orthopaedic Surgeons are also needed as there are many cases of severe cellulitis, gangrene and necrotic extremities. Exchange of teams is necessary to give respite and allow time for physical and psychological recovery.
Response to the above can be made through Lydia who is the Chairperson of the CMDF Indonesia. Her e-mail is tgunadi@centrin.net.id She will refer you to the relief team in Medan. Other help is required for water and sanitation experts.
Dr. Vinod Shah, the regional ICMDA Secretary is coordinating responses across the region, especially in India. CMC Vellore is responding in a big way - in a place called NAGAPATINAM and also gearing up to respond in Sri Lanka where they have been requested to help with public health nurses and counsellors. They are happy to coordinate and help with placements.
Vinod may be contacted on matters relating to the tsunami on e-mail - dedu@cmcvellore.ac.in
Please continue to pray for these affected by this disaster, and for those who are seeking to respond. Many national Christian medical bodies are already actively involved. Please contact the CMF office for more information.
We will post more information as it becomes available.
