On July 12th we will be holding a one-day celebration of
our one hundred and twenty fifth anniversary. To mark
this occasion we are holding two events at Oak Hill
College. From lunchtime, there is a half-day conference for
students and health professionals to find out some of the
ways in which they could be involved with mission. There
will be a range of speakers, including Eldryd Parry of
THET, speaking on the current health needs of the
developing world, Marion Knell on taking families
overseas, Andrew Ferguson on the professional issues
facing those working abroad, plus many others. There will
also be exhibitions from Christian mission and aid
agencies, and opportunities to meet with others working in
the field, all making this an essential event for anyone
interested in Christian healthcare mission.
Celebrating 125 years
of MMA HealthServe
There will also be a service in the evening
celebrating 125 years of MMA HealthServe. Please
do join us as we remember God’s work over the past
century and a quarter through the many medical
men and women of God who have served in
overseas mission. Bill Gould, formerly of InterServe
in Nepal, will be preaching.
Registration for the day costs £5 (free to students,
unwaged or overseas workers), and covers a buffet
lunch and refreshments.
Anniversary Appeal
In the coming twelve months, regardless of any
administrative changes, we are aiming to increase
the amount of support we give to mobilising health
professionals to serve in the areas of greatest need
worldwide. Although we are planning to merge with
CMF, most of these areas of work are ones that we
already undertake jointly with CMF, and will
continue regardless of the process of merger.
To this end, we have launched an appeal to raise
£50,000 in the next year. This money will be used
thus:
Student Grants
(£25,000)
We aim to provide 125 grants to enable healthcare
students serve Christ overseas: Many will go on to
work in the developing world long-term as a direct
result of their experience.
Postgraduate Grants
(£9,000)
As part of our work we seek to give study grants to
Christian healthcare professionals working in
overseas mission enabling them to be more effective
in their work. This is vital in keeping highly skilled
workers equipped and motivated to work in the
mission field long-term.
Healthserve Pages
(£7,500)
Tracking down information related to healthcare
and medical mission can be difficult, especially
whilst overseas. The HealthServe Pages meets that
need, both as a physical book, and as a searchable
database on our website.
Student Training Days
(£4,000)
A full days training to motivate and equip
healthcare students for world mission. Run with
CMF, TSCF, CSNM and CDF, these training days
are specifically focused on how to prepare for and
make the most of an overseas elective.
Developing Health CDROM
(£3,250)
This developing world focused CD-ROM will meet
the training needs of healthcare workers where
quality teaching resources are limited. This is based
on the course contents of the Residential Refresher
Course.
Refresher Course
(£1,250)
Our annual Refresher Course, run with CMF, trains
and prepares 30 healthcare professionals to work in
the developing world as Christian healthcare
missionaries.
We hope to raise this money from charitable trusts
and the gifts of individual supporters. Thanks to the
support of many individuals and churches, we have
raised nearly £3,000 towards supporting student
elective grants, and have received £4,500 towards
the total from several trusts. We still have some way
to go. Please prayerfully consider whether you can
give towards our vision to serve and release yet
more Christian health professionals into missionary
work around the world.
For example - £5 will pay for one copy of the
HealthServe Pages or two copies of the Developing
Health CD-ROM to go to a missionary overseas. £10
will cover the cost of a student attending an Elective
training day, £30 will pay for a health professional to
attend one day of the Refresher Course, and £100
will cover nearly half a grant to a student going on
an elective.
