Mother Sees Her Children
SAMUEL G POWDRILL, Tenwek Eye Clinic, Kenya

New eye patients have increased by 1000 per year. Most were in the community. This has resulted in better care for the more difficult eye problems seen in Tenwek. We have more than doubled the number of cataract operations in one year to 1300. The cost to the patient has remained low. The income generated by the clinic has been significant, due to the volume of patients as well as the sale of glasses. We have reduced our purchase cost of eye drops by preparing our own.

Excitement! ... yet sadness
One mother and two children were born blind with congenital cataracts. All three had their eyes operated on and two of them are seeing well. It has been exciting to watch the mother seeing her children for the first time and slowly begin to recognise many things that up to now she has only known by sound and touch. She had been blind for 35 years.

A splendid team
The Eye Clinic staff have enjoyed a year of harmony. We have been able to help a number of patients. One member has been training the Community Health Helpers. Another went for training at Kikuyu Hospital. She completed the course with high marks. Sam completed an MPhil degree in ophthalmics from the University of London.

Change and growth ahead
We have been approved to increase our own eye drop production and to begin production of some glasses as well. We look for help in rehabilitation for patients who are terminally blind, in view of the time and cost of this type of work. We acknowledge the Christoffel Blindenmission for support and Kikuyu Hospital for their excellent care of our referral patients to them.
