Liberia - Is the work finished?
Extracted with permission from SIM UKView 1996 Vol 7 No 4

Following the evacuation of the three remaining SIMers in early May the entire ELWA complex (Radio, Hospital, Academy and housing) were abandoned to the war. Over the next few days the buildings were stripped of everything portable. The 50 kilowatt transmitter had been nearly ready to resume broadcasts in major West African languages after a silence of nearly six years. After the previous evacuations in 1990 and 1992 a great number of Liberians turned to God, but as things began to return to normal many did not honour their promises. Comments made include these:-

'Our biggest grief is for the churches and co-workers who are family to us and for the greater suffering they face'.

'Perhaps, in His mercy, God is allowing them another opportunity to turn to Him and make commitments'.

Some of the former missionaries are now working among Liberian refugees in Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire and a fund has been set up to help those Liberians known to SIM personnel.
