Editorial
by Steven Fouch, MMA HealthServe Director

Welcome to the new look HealthServe magazine. After many decades, 'Saving Health' magazine has undergone more than a change of name and design. We hope to bring more news and information on health care mission in all parts of the globe. Please let us know what you think of it, and feel free to send in comments, articles and ideas.

Why HealthServe? The Medical Missionary Association has, for over a hundred years sought to serve Christians who took their clinical skills overseas to serve the poorest of the poor in Christ's name. That continues to be our aim. The times have changed, the means by which we serve God's servants have moved on, but certain things remain fundamental.

As we start the third millennium since Jesus' birth, the world we live in still faces many of the problems it faced in his day. Here in the West we may be enjoying unparalleled prosperity and the benefits of hi-tech medicine and communications technologies. But for two thirds of the World there is still huge poverty, injustice, and a general lack of Good News.

When Jesus was on earth, there was wealth and power in Rome, but the majority of those ruled by that ancient superpower lived under the burden of poverty and oppression. Jesus came bearing Good News - not of political revolution, but of something altogether more dangerous and life changing. He brought the news that there was a God who cared enough to get involved with the world, to live in it as one of us and to die for it, and to open the gates of heaven for those who accepted Him He also brought a more immediate hope - wherever He went He healed the sick, and charged those who follow Him to do likewise.

At the heart of healthcare mission is the simple obedience to our Master in bringing good news to the poor and sick of the world. The heart and vision of MMA HealthServe is still to encourage and equip those who have the clinical skills and resources to go to those with the greatest need. Healing in Jesus' name is more than just treating illness - it is sharing Good News about a God who cares so much that He still sends His people to those who need Him the most.
