3.8 How do I find a post?

Keep an eye on http://www.bmjcareers.com/ for interesting articles and ideas. They often contain useful tips on how to get involved.

3.8.1 Christian Organisations (See Appendix 6 for contact details)

World Service Enquiry www.wse.org.uk/
An ecumenical, non-denominational charity, produces a list of opportunities from over 40 agencies.

Christian Vocations www.christianvocations.org/
Publish a Short Term Service Directory which contains details of many medical opportunities overseas and advice about working overseas, short and longer term.

Beware

There are increasing numbers of Christian hospitals overseas which have no UK mission base or office. It is essential to find out as much as possible about them early in your planning

CMF website addresses and contact address:

www.healthserve.org/pages/ - a yellow pages of useful contact addresses

www.healthserve.org/developing_health/ - details of the Developing Health Course

www.healthserve.org/overseas_opportunites/ - current overseas vacancies

peter.armon@cmf.org.uk – a ten minute chat might save you hours of research

3.8.2 Secular Agencies (Appendix 6 for contact details)

There are many posts available through secular agencies. These give a rich opportunity for you but there can be drawbacks - not least the possible lack of Christian support and fellowship. A comprehensive list of commercial recruitment agencies can be found at www.medicstravel.com

Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) specialises in 1-2 year service projects in LDCs. VSO also co-sponsors training fellowships with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Paediatrics of 6-12 months duration in certain accredited posts. Details can be obtained through the Colleges and the VSO website.

BMJ Careers advertises overseas posts. www.bmjcareers.com/

RedR www.redr.org/london/ holds a unique register (incorporating a Central Emergency and Disaster Relief Register) for health and management professionals. It provides information about jobs in LDCs and identifies suitably experienced people for a variety of development and emergency posts.
